How to Play Truth or Dare (Spin the Bottle Rules + Variations)

Truth or Dare is simple: someone gets picked, they choose Truth or Dare, and the group gives a prompt. The only way it goes wrong is pressure. Use the rules below and you’ll keep it fun.

How to play

Core rules (fast)

  1. Pick a starter (youngest, birthday person, or random).
  2. Choose the next player (spin a bottle, point, or random picker).
  3. They choose: Truth or Dare.
  4. The group gives a prompt. Player can complete it or pass.
  5. Repeat for rounds. Keep dares short to keep momentum.
Pro tip: the host’s job is protecting the vibe: no pressure, no humiliation, and quick switching when something feels off.

Setup

What you need

  • A circle of players (3+ works best).
  • A bottle (or any spinner) if you want the classic format.
  • A shared “pass” rule (no explanations).
  • A timer (optional) to keep turns under 30 seconds.

Spin the bottle method

  1. Put the bottle in the center.
  2. The current player spins the bottle.
  3. Whoever it points to is up next.
  4. They choose Truth or Dare and play continues.

If the bottle points between two people, either respin or let the spinner choose between them.

Variations (keep it fresh)

Truth-only warmup

First 5 turns are truth-only to get comfortable.

Two options

Always give two prompts: “Pick A or B” (less pressure).

Timer mode

Dares max 20–30 seconds to keep momentum.

Compliment finale

Last round is compliments only (ends on a high note).

Safety + consent rules

Non-negotiables

  • Passing is normal; no guilt trips.
  • No touching dares unless explicitly agreed by everyone involved.
  • No illegal/dangerous dares, and no posting/filming without permission.
  • If someone seems unsure or uncomfortable, stop and switch.
